Some Enchanted Evening - Prom Tunes!

It's Prom week, kids.
If you forgot to make that appointment for your "up do", you'd better hurry the hell up. And if you don't have a sidebar button from me yet, hurry the hell up with that too.

It's Prom song day. Leave a song you remember in the comments or email 'em to me. Either way, I'll keep trying to update the official Playlist all day.
If you are confused as to what usually qualifies as a Prom song, mostly it seems to be the biggest, cheesiest, most romantic song of that particular year. You know, the kind of song that makes hormonal teenage girls on the Prom committee look at each other and demand that it MUST be the Prom theme or their Prom night may not be perfect! Horrors!

It might just be a pretty fun and intriguing song set after all. Enough that I will send a copy of the official 2nd Annual Blog Prom on CD to somebody after this week is over. Provided my computer doesn't crash again like after last year...I still owe one to MJD from the first Blog Prom that is sitting on a table in the other room. I. Suck.

So, email and if you have some sort of memory about a particular song (like your date was, uh, "excited" while you slow danced, or a friend of yours spent that song crying in the girls' bathroom) please share it! I don't care if they're good memories or the ones that make you cringe, it's been awhile, time to have some fun!

Song credits shout out to:
  • I went to Prom all four years of high school and two of the years there was an actual song as the Prom theme - Danger Zone one year and Heaven on Earth another.
  • Our thanks to Tink for requesting Bye, Bye, Bye and Kiss from a Rose
  • Amy is to thank for the crooning Bob Segar
  • Nancy is making the most of her first Prom with the Marvin Gaye tune and some Rolling Stones
  • Mrs. T is a song monger with her requests - Never Say Goodbye, Eternal Flame, In Your Eyes, Against All Odds, and Lady in Red
  • Florinda added The Best of Times
  • And my date, Gina, offered up some cheesy awesomeness from the late 80s - How Can I Fall, When I See You Smile, So Alive, and I Don't Want Your Love (by the band that brought us together - Duran Duran)
  • The utterly fabulous Tim paid the DJ a whole dollar to play The Search is Over
  • Leave it to Emily to get the Sir Mix-A-Lot going, and at the entirely OPPOSITE end of the spectrum, Michael Bolton. Holy crap that's a jump.
  • Michael says he did NOT and COULD NOT touch this when MC Hammer came on
  • Golfwidow fondly remembers admiring Richard Marx' hair, all 300 pounds of it, as he crooned Hold On to the Nights, but what she really wanted was Journey because no one had tighter pants than Steve Perry
  • You look Wonderful Tonight Kerry
  • Magpie comes to us via the Stairway
  • Baby, I love your way PunditMom
  • Nikki is feeling it all rushing back to her with Right Now, Enter Sandman and Shiny Happy People
  • Edge must have been a pushover with all the chicks, his list has every power ballad from the late 80s I do believe - I hope it paid off for you, dude
I will keep updating the list all day long!! Keep sending in the tunes, think of it as a long distance dedication!

The "official" song of our prom in 1987 was "The Search is Over" by Survivor. Not the Rocky era tough-guy Survivor, this was the cheesy, ballady, second-singer era Survivor, that was all lovey.

I don't remember the prom song. I am just so over high school. lol Just checking in to see how things are going with you, Sunshine!

Prom songs... Hmmmm... I can see by the selections that people's eras are going to be easy to determine.

But Bye, bye, bye? Tink! I thought you had better taste than that!

As I told you last year, I didn't go to the prom so I can't tell you the cheesy songs...

To Love Somebody, Michael Bolton
A Whole New World, Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle
I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That), Meat Loaf
Red Red Wine (??)
But the biggest song we danced to at prom... that the DJ had all the LADIES get on the floor for...

Baby Got back - Sir Mix A Lot

"Official" prom theme: Hold On to the Nights by Richard Marx.

Personal choice would have been Why Can't This Night Go On Forever by Journey.

Class of 1990 Rulz! Our corn-ball prom song / theme was "What The Night Can Do" by Steve Winwood. Funny that most of the seniors didn't even know who Steve Winwood was at that point.

Our song was "Wonderful Tonight", which I'm pretty sure wasn't a new song in 1998. I think my class might have actually had some taste in music?

Please tell me "Bye Bye Bye" wasn't really Tink's prom song. And btw, "Faithfully" was the first dance at my wedding, but it was totally appropriate to our situation.

Um, Stairway to Heaven?

Magpie beat me to the punch. Does that mean we're "old" if it's Stairway to Heaven? How about Baby, I Love Your Way, Peter Frampton?

Yeah, I'm that old! ;)

Red red wine was UB40, just an FYI.
I don't think they played this at prom, but you know what song came out when I was either a jr. or sr.? Divynils - I touch myself.

We also had "Shiny happy People" and "Losing my Religion" by REM, but I honestly don't remember any songs from prom.

Probably "Right Now" by Van Halen, "Enter Sandman" from Mettalica, oh, I do remember. You know the Bryan Adams song, it was everyone's "song" back then (including it's still my brother-in-law's song with his wife) Everything I do, I do it for you. Lame ass song.

That's why I can't remember, they didn't play much I liked.

Oh, and I'm obviously crashing the prom as I never signed up so, there you go.

Mine's already listed, dammit.

"Never Say Goodbye..." Bon Jovi.

Sigh...

If you need something to get everyone out on the dance floor, try "Sweet Home Alabama." For some reason that gets us going here in TENNESSEE. Go figure.

:: Almost Paradise - Mike Reino & Anne Wilson
:: These Dreams - Heart
:: Faithfully - Journey
:: High On You - Survivor
:: Purple Rain - Prince
:: Don't Let It End - Styx
:: Hold On To The Night - Richard Marx

Our prom theme was "In Your Eyes". I thought it sounded like an insult or threat. It was printed on all the pictures. Also, the last song of every school dance was "American Pie" by Don McLean. Everybody would gather in a big circle and put their arms around each other swaying back and forth to the music. You would think we were a special ed school.

I had to look this up because I forgot ... it's been 12 years.

"Visions of a Sunset" Shawn Stockman (from Boyz II Men)

Yeah, I know. Couldn't even sing you one line ... it's *that* good of a song.

our song for our 1995 prom was Oh what a night....cheesy as heck

Edge said...

No ... it did not work for me. It did allow me some good makeout sessions, but no, I did not "score" or "hit a home run" in high school especially at prom. Especially with my fundamentalist date.

I think Knight went to school with hippies. The only reason we got in a circle was to watch a fight.

I wish I went to school with Hippies! It was actually hicks that wandered out of the cornfields at my school.

Reminds me of some Roxy Music...say something from Avelon.

Its been almost 20 years, 1988! I don't remember a "prom song" but am sure INXS and The Cure were played. Heck, I don't even remember if I danced--and I had a date.

I just can't stop dancing. What a great song list. I also remember how Chris Isaack's Wicked Game came on during one of my proms. After seeing the video, none of us were really sure how to dance to that one.

I can't remember what our prom song was. I can't remember anything from prom, only that we skipped dinner and rented a limo and my girlfriend at the time told me I sucked at dancing.

Fun to see these song lists...I can't remember what the theme was. 1984 was a long time ago! =0

Ooops...did I just get caught sneaking into prom w/o a ticket? Because I totally did not sign up.

never actually been to a Prom, and the only ones I know about are the one from Carrie and Mean Girls...

But I am lovin' Nikki's songs!

Tink said...

LL: I didn't pick it! It just so happened to be the "it" song of the year I graduated. My roommate a year later had a dance routine to it and everything.

Aw, how sweet. Thanks Birdman! Hopefully that's not the booze talking. ;)
